Deenihan launches Official Guide to Literary Dublin

Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will today, Tuesday 13 September 2011, officially launch

Dublin, City of Literature

, by Muriel Bolger, the first official guide to literary Dublin.

Commenting on the launch, Minister Deenihan said:

“Dublin as a City of Literature means offering a new creative tourism that is about visitors experiencing Irish literary life so that they have an authentic engagement in the real cultural life of our city. In this context, this fantastic new guide will prove to be very beneficial for visitors to Dublin and indeed Dubliners themselves in experiencing what our literary heritage has to offer."

The guide is published by The O’Brien Press and was developed in direct response to Dublin’s designation as a UNESCO City of Literature in July last year.

Commenting on UNESCO designation, Minister Deenihan said

"Our capital is steeped in literary tradition and history and therefore it was more than fitting that the designation as a UNESCO City of Literature was bestowed on Dublin in July last year. This is a permanent designation that confirms our artistic reputation worldwide."

This guide is an important new resource which includes four totally new literary walks, photographs of significant literary landmarks, unique statements from writers on what Dublin means to them and also a directory of writers associated with Dublin.

Minister Deenihan concluded: "

This guide will prove to be an effective tool for the promotion of Dublin from both a literary and tourism point of view. It will also be a valuable resource for anyone promoting Ireland abroad or organising tours and conferences in Ireland. I wish to congratulate Muriel Bolger for producing this wonderful publication. I would also like to commend Michael O'Brien, publisher of O'Brien Press and indeed all Irish publishers for continuing to publish works of great merit during challenging economic times; and the authors who continue to write works that make Dublin and Ireland great."
