Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will today (Wednesday 10th October 2012) launch the 2013 Programme of Exhibitions in Trinity College Science Gallery, Pearse Street, Dublin 2.
The Science Gallery has a particular focus on engaging 15-25 year olds with science and innovation. Speaking in advance of the launch Minister Deenihan said "I am delighted once again to have the opportunity to visit the Science Gallery. The programme of events I am launching for the coming year certainly pique my interest. I am also very pleased to see that the visitor numbers to the Gallery continue to outstrip the targets and this certainly explains why there has been significant international interest in bringing the Science Gallery model for public engagement to other cities with a vision of stimulating a culture of innovation."
Speaking at the announcement, Science Gallery Founding Director Michael John Gorman said, "In 2012 Science Gallery welcomed its 1,000,000th visitor after just four years of existence. In 2013 we are inviting our visitors to dream big, through a dynamic programme of future-facing exhibitions and events. From creating new organisms through synthetic biology to the science of risk, our exhibition programme will draw art and science into creative collisions to spark off new ideas around frontier areas of science and technology and help inspire the next generation of creative minds.
The following list details the 2013 Programme of Exhibitions:
FEB – APRIL 2013 OSCILLATOR
is a curated exhibition exploring the vibrant vibratory world of oscillators, oscillations, and feedback. This diverse, interactive show will feature installations and demonstrations ranging from cyclical chemical reactions and swinging bridges to out of control automated pricing schemes and el Niño.
MAY – JUNE 2013 RISK LAB
will be a lab in the gallery exploring our ability as humans to assess risk from experiments in neuroscience and genetics to the mathematics of probability and risk
JUNE – SEPT 2013 ILLUSION
will be a curated, open call exhibition exploring the physics and biology of illusion. How do our senses deceive us? Featuring major installations that illustrate the science of magic, perception and what we perceive as paranormal, ILLUSION will be a highly participative show catering to Science Gallery Summer audiences.
OCT 2013 – JAN 2014 LIVING MACHINES
will be a curated, open call exhibition tackling the provocative questions surrounding the research implications of synthetic biology. MUTANT will tackle both extremes of hype surrounding synthetic biology from the threat of world-ending disaster on one end and the promise of solving all the world’s ills on the other leaving audiences with a nuanced and thoughtful assessment of the discipline of synthetic biology.
Minister Deenihan also congratulated the Science Gallery for introducing the new Artist in Residence Programme. This project, in association with Trinity College, School of Physics is being part funded by the Arts Council. "Grace Weir will be in residence for 12 weeks and I want to commend the Gallery on this further initiativeI know that these residencies are very much sought after and I want to wish both Grace and the Gallery every success with this new partnership."
