Deenihan Unveils Photographic Tribute to the Late Con Houlihan

Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, will this evening (Wednesday 7

th

November, 2012) formally unveil a photographic tribute to the late Con Houlihan by renowned Cork artist Liam Mulcahy.

The photographic tribute was commissioned by the management of Mulligan's Pub and will stand as a reminder to all who frequent this famous hostelry of one of the great legends of our time who passed through the door and stopped for a while.

The photographs that make up this exhibition have been taken over a long period of time and include images of Con with Mick O'Dwyer and Minister Deenihan. Also included is the image of the widow of John B Keane – Mary Keane – reading her copy of the newspaper in her public house. There are some aerial images of Sceilig Mhichíl, and close up shots of a Gullie beside the Beehive Huts all feature in this montage.

Speaking at the event, Minister Deenihan said "Con Houlihan was a great sports writer who brought the game to life for his readers and was a towering figure in sports journalism for many decades. Not only was he knowledgeable on sporting matters but he also had an intense interest in, and love for, the arts, with the knowledge to back up that interest. I feel humbled and privileged to unveil this photographic tribute at a place that was synonymous with Con for much of his life. While many times in life we use the phrase– ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann for Con I know that statement to be true."
