Dublin Picked for Lonely Planet's Top 5 New Year's Eve destinations

Dublin has been picked as one of the top five destinations for New Year’s Eve 2013 by the respected Lonely Planet guide, which Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar described as a great boost to this year’s festival.

Minister Varadkar said: ‘The 2013 New Year’s Eve Festival in Dublin will be extra special as it marks the start of the Gathering Ireland. Lonely Planet has now come on board by selecting Dublin as one of its five recommended places to bring in the new year’.

“It’s great to get this recommendation from one of the most respected travel guide companies in the world. Dublin has been ranked alongside Chiang Mai in Thailand, Prague, and the French Alps. With this positive message going out around the world, I would urge Irish people everywhere to join in the celebrations in Dublin, or with their own local festival. Failte Ireland has promised that this New Year’s Eve Festival will be the best ever, while Tourism Ireland is already promoting the Lonely Planet endorsement.”

The Lonely Planet website singles out the annual fireworks display and the ‘torchlit procession of floats, fire breathers and stilt walkers’. This year’s extended festival will even bigger to mark the start of the Gathering Ireland 2013, and has invited people from around the world to take part in the torchlit procession with candles, lanterns or torches, followed by an open air concert in College Green.

The other locations selected by Lonely Planet are:

Prague, Czech Republic

New South Wales Coast

Chiang Mai, Thailand

French Alps
