eHealth Week: Driving a Healthier Europe

The use of technology to revolutionise healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes will be the focus of international eHealth Week, taking place in Dublin’s Convention Centre from 13th – 15th May 2013.

The conference and exhibition will bring together the best of healthcare technology and experts in the field of ‘Connected Health’. eHealth Week will provide opportunities for leading ambassadors and innovators in the areas of health care management and technology to share best practice, and to showcase emerging trends in the ‘Connected Health’ industry.

The conference will create opportunities for broadening market development through collaboration between business leaders and policy makers leading not only to positive health outcomes for patients, but also seeking to maximise economic benefits and employment potential for Ireland through the development of new technologies.

The event is expected to attract over 2,500 international delegates and 100 exhibitors including global decision makers from public and private healthcare sectors, clinicians, hospital and IT managers and VIP guests. VIP guests include Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Governor Deval Patrick (Massachusetts), and Senator Therese Murray, Senate President of Massachusetts. Exhibitors will showcase the best in Irish and international eHealth innovation aimed at solving real problems in the healthcare system.

The Exhibition area will include representation from Canada, Europe and the USA as well as indigenous companies. An exciting new addition will be the EU-US eHealth Marketplace, a matchmaking event designed to encourage collaboration between European and US companies and other stakeholders.

The Irish Presidency / European Commission Pavilion will take centre stage at the Convention Centre and will be host to the Department of Health, the European Commission, Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland and a number of state and industry stakeholders and companies.

Building a healthier Europe is a key priority for Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Irish Presidency will host a High Level meeting of EU Ministers at Dublin Castle, as well as a series of talks on Connected Health as part of the World of Health IT Conference and Exhibition (WoHIT) organised by HIMSS Europe*. Dr. James Reilly T.D., Minister for Health will welcome Ms Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission and Dr. Tonio Borg, European Commissioner for Health & Consumer Policy to Dublin Castle and to the Convention Centre.

Prof George Crooks, OBE

Medical Director, NHS 24 & Scottish Centre for Telehealth and Telecare

Session title: European Innovation Partnership for Active and Healthy Ageing Integrated Care (B3) Action Group

Professor George Crooks is currently the Medical Director for NHS 24 and Director of the Scottish Centre for Telehealth & Telecare. He is also Medical Director for the Scottish Ambulance Service where he is responsible for the quality, safety and effectiveness of all clinical services and the development of new services in partnership with other NHS organisations. George was elected to President of the European Health Telematics Association in February 2012. He leads the Integrated Care Action Group on behalf of the European Commission within the European Partnership for Active and Healthy Ageing. NHS 24 is the national provider of telehealth services for the whole of Scotland currently providing the majority of its services via telephony, the web and digital television. The Scottish Ambulance Service provides accident and emergency and patient transport services for the whole of Scotland, covering a population of circa 5.2 million people. George was a General Practitioner in Aberdeen for 22 years. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2011 for services to healthcare.

Synopsis of her presentation: A new website where patients and public can find Health Apps tried And tested by people like them. Health Apps scrutinised by patient groups and empowered consumers.

Alex Wyke is CEO and founder of PatientView, a UK-based research, publishing and consultancy group. PatientView has worked to build bridges worldwide with the health NGOs that comprise the patient movement, to help define and support one of the most important phenomenon changing healthcare in the 21st Century. Today PatientView has the capacity to reach out to 120,000 such groups (covering over 1,000 specialties, and from most countries in the world). From 1996 to 2000 Alex was responsible for creating and running the international healthcare publishing unit at The Economist Intelligence Unit. She was previously business and science correspondent for The Economist. Alex continues to write for The Economist Intelligence Unit. Her most recent publication being on The Future of Healthcare, which was published by the EIU in March 2011, and was sponsored by Janssen.

Alex was elected by the BBC in 1996 to participate in a small team assessing the Corporation’s radio and TV coverage on science and technology. As well as lecturing, presenting and chairing healthcare forums worldwide , Alex also sits on the advisory board of the healthcare initiative of INSEAD management school Paris, and has worked for television and radio, appearing in an expert capacity on several programmes.

Desmond Fitzgerald

Session Title: Realising the High Economic and Societal Value of eHealth, eHealth as a Stimulus for Economic Growth and Development

Biography

Desmond Fitzgerald is the Vice-President for Research, Principal of Health Sciences and Professor of Molecular Medicine at UCD. After graduating in medicine from UCD and training in the US, he headed the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at RCSI where he established Ireland’s first Clinical Research Centre. At UCD, he has been responsible for the development of a range of research programmes, including the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training, the Charles Institute for Dermatology Research and Training, the UCD Science Centreand the National Digital Research Centre. His own research is in cardiovascular disease and technologies applied to early stage clinical trials.

Prof. Gerry Lyons is Professor of Information Technology at National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) Ireland and Head of University’s IT Academic Department. He is also a founder director of the University’s Medical Informatics Research Group. During the past 15 years he has been a key influencer in the development of the ICT sector in Ireland. He holds a doctorate in Engineering and is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland. Gerry has 30 years of experience in academic and industrial research, product development, manufacturing, management and consulting, and is a director of several technology companies. Before joining NUI Galway, Gerry worked as European Research Projects Manager with Digital Equipment Corporation, and earlier worked with national and international research agencies. He is a highly respected international advisor to many of the leading Fortune 100 companies, in the Healthcare, FMCG, Financial Services, ICT and Pharmaceutical sectors, and also works with public sector agencies in Ireland. He is the current President of the Health Informatics Society of Ireland (HISI) and is a founder/director of a university spin-off medical informatics company, Syncrophi Research Ltd.
