Expressions of Interest sought for consideration for appointment to the Board of the Private Security Authority

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Mr Alan Shatter T.D., today

announced he was seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified

members of the public who wish to be considered for appointment as members

of the Private Security Authority.

The Private Security Authority, which was established pursuant to the

Private Security Services Act 2004 (as amended), is the statutory body with

responsibility for licensing and regulating the private security industry

in Ireland.

The main functions of the Authority are as follows:

· Controlling and supervising persons providing security services and

maintaining and improving standards in the provision of those

services;

· Granting and renewing of licences;

· Issuing identity cards to licensees;

· Suspending and revoking licences;

· Establishing and maintaining a register of licensees

· Specifying standards to be observed in the provision of security

services;

· Specifying qualifications or requirements for the granting of

licences;

· Investigating security services being provided by any person;

The Minister stated: "Since the establishment of the Private Security

Authority on a statutory basis in 2004, clients of private security service

providers continue to be assured that the industry is working to the

highest standards possible. Confidence in the industry has greatly improved

as a result of the manner in which the Authority carries out its functions

and this in turn reflects well on security service providers throughout the

country”.
