HAYES ATTENDS OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE NEW GRANDSTAND AT CLONMEL GREYHOUND STADIUM

Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Tom Hayes TD, today attended at Clonmel Greyhound Stadium for the official opening of the new Grandstand.

Speaking at the event the Minister highlighted the immense contribution made by the greyhound racing industry noting that Bord na gCon estimates the industry injects €500 million into local economies per annum and sustains approximately 10,000 full and part-time jobs directly and indirectly, many in rural communities. The Minister observed that “these long-awaited new facilities are particularly welcome for those of us with a passion for this great industry”. The Minister also took the opportunity to acknowledge that Clonmel is widely regarded by many as “the home of greyhound racing in Ireland”.

The Minister praised all those involved noting that it was a “particular challenge to see the project through to completion in very difficult economic circumstances” and observed that this feat was achieved “on schedule and within budget”. Minister Hayes acknowledged the huge efforts made by the Chairman, Donal O’Connor and the entire Board of Clonmel Greyhound Stadium. He also paid tribute to the instrumental role played by the Clonmel Track Supporters Club who have made “a huge contribution through their sponsorship” and have been “instrumental in maintaining the status of this fine facility as one of the best and most popular greyhound venues in the country.”

The Minister noted that “Bord na gCon’s support has been key to delivering on this development, providing financial assistance to the tune of €1m”.

Minister Hayes concluded by wishing “all the greyhound fraternity continued success in the future” and he hoped that “this great Stadium, with its long and distinguished history, continues to go from strength to strength in the future”.
