Jimmy Deenihan TD launches The Complete Carolan Songs and Airs arranged for the Irish Harp by Caitríona Rowsome

Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, will today (Tuesday 2 October 2012) launch Caitríona Rowsome's book

The Complete Carolan Songs and Airs arranged for the Irish Harp

at Clontarf Castle. The book, which is published by Waltons, includes a companion set of 4 CDs of the complete collection of arrangements, played by the author. It also collects Carolan's extant lyrics along with historical notes.

Speaking in advance of the launch, Minister Deenihan said "Turlough O'Carolan was one of the finest, if not the finest Irish composer. His music bridged the gap between continental art music and Gaelic harp and folk music. His music was distinctively Irish, yet has an international flavour."

"The author, Caitríona Rowsome, was born into a family steeped in Irish music and creative arts. This book is the culmination of many years of dedication, hard work and commitment, and will contribute to our knowledge of this great Irish composer."

"The instrument that O'Carolan wrote for, the harp, has become a symbol of Irish identity. Our culture and tradition is what makes us unique, gives us our identity, and sets us apart on the world stage. It is also this tradition and our deep connection with, and understanding of that heritage, musical and otherwise, that attracts the many visitors to these shores, and makes Ireland a destination of choice for cultural tourists from the four corners of the world."
