Minister Creighton meets key contacts in new Spanish Government

Minister for European Affairs, Lucinda Creighton T.D. met with her Spanish colleague Iñigo Mendez de Vigo, Minister for European Affairs, in Madrid today (Wednesday).

The Ministers discussed the Eurozone crisis and strategies for following up on the outcomes of the most recent European Council meeting, particularly on youth unemployment.

Speaking in Madrid Minister Creighton said: “I had a very productive meeting with my Spanish colleague today. We discussed many issues including the latest developments in the Euro area. We also had very constructive talks about how we can co-operate to ensure that the conclusions of the last European Council meeting, particularly on youth unemployment, can be advanced. European Commission action teams on youth unemployment will be visiting Madrid and Dublin later this month with a view to targeted plans being ready by April. Our governments will be co-operating closely at European level on the preparation and implementation of these plans.”

Earlier in an address to the Elcano Institute of International Affair, attended by His Royal Highness Prince Felipe, the Minister said: “I believe that it is evident that without growth, Europe will not recover. Without growth, we will not generate jobs. Growth is thus the key. It is necessary to restore fiscal balances and market confidence in debt sustainability. It is the key to supporting job creation and addressing the unemployment crisis, particularly that facing our young people. This is true in Ireland, in Spain and in the rest of Europe alike. But growth will not generate itself. We need to create the right conditions and the environment to nurture it right across the Union. That is why the job-creating growth agenda is critical.”

Minister Creighton also held meetings with Irish state agencies and business contacts to discuss opportunities for Irish firms in the Spanish market.
