Today, (14 January 2014), Jimmy Deenihan T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Chair of the National Famine Commemoration Committee, announced that this year's National Famine Commemoration will take place on Sunday, 11th May 2014 in Strokestown, County Roscommon.

Minister Deenihan announced that An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny T.D., has accepted an invitation to lead the official representation at this year's National Famine Commemoration.

Speaking today, Minister Deenihan said:

I am delighted to announce that this year's National Famine Commemoration is being held on Sunday, 11th May in the presence of An Taoiseach. This will be the 7th consecutive year in which the National Famine Commemoration has taken place. Each annual commemoration is a very moving and fitting solemn tribute in remembrance of our forebears who perished, emigrated and suffered such loss during this desolate time. At its heart is a ceremony in which local host communities are greatly involved and which culminates in the formal State ceremonial event, with its National flag and military honours, and wreath laying ceremonies. The community in Strokestown, County Roscommon, will greatly appreciate An Taoiseach's participation in this year's commemoration. I and the members of the National Famine Commemoration Committee look forward to engaging with the local community, as they bring their unique perspective to one of the greatest tragedies in our nation's history.
