Minister Deenihan offers his sympathy on the death of Phyllis Ryan

Jimmy Deenihan TD Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has offered

his sympathy following the death of Phyllis Ryan.

Minister Deenihan said: “I am deeply saddened at hearing of the passing of

Phyllis Ryan, one of the great stalwarts of Irish Theatre. Phyllis lived

and led many decades of Irish Theatre history and has left a lasting

impression with all who knew her.

“She was a doyenne of Irish Theatre, who forged her way with extraordinary

determination and creativity from the early days right through to modern

times. As a prolific actor, director and producer, she was a highly

significant figure in Irish Theatre and much loved by all her peers.

“Through her association with many companies, including Gemini Productions,

which she formed in 1960, Phyllis was an indelible part of our theatrical

tradition and can never be replaced.

“I wish to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of

Phyllis at this very difficult time.”
