A programme of local events is taking place in Kilrush between 3rd May and 12th May to commemorate the Great Irish Famine in the lead up to the National Famine Commemoration taking place in Kilrush on 12th May 2013. Highlights include the West Clare Kidney Support group’s 8k ‘Great Famine Walk’ on Sunday, 5th May, theatrical performances, interesting lectures and guided walks throughout the week. A number of exhibitions, poetry, music and song will also be taking place. There will be no charge for any of the events and donation boxes for charities currently fighting Famine around the world will be located at some venues.

Speaking today Minister Deenihan said “I would like to thank the organising committee and council officials who are working so hard to make the National Famine Commemoration a success. The programme of events is a huge tribute to those lives lost during the Great Famine and shows the deep respect held by Irish people for the suffering endured during this difficult time in our history. It also shows our commitment to highlighting issues of world hunger and famine in other parts of the world today.”
