Minister Fitzgerald confirms Ireland is to present a report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child later this year

Minister for Children & Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald TD has confirmed that Ireland is to present a report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child later this year. Minister Fitzgerald stated: "Ireland ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1992 and as Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, I am determined that Ireland should live up to the principles we have signed up to in the UN Convention.

"Ireland submitted our second progress report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in 2005/2006. A third progress report was due to be submitted in 2009, but regrettably this did not happen.

"I have therefore directed that a substantial progress report, combining the third and fourth reports, to cover the period 2006 to 2011 inclusive should to be submitted to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in mid-2012.

"An Inter-Departmental Liaison Group chaired by my Department has been established to prepare the report and this group met for the first time last month. The report will outline what has been done in terms of developments for children during the period 2006 to 2011 and the likely developments for 2012-13.
