Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan TD, on the announcement of a ceasefire in Ukraine

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, TD today welcomed the reported signature by the Ukrainian Government and pro-Russian rebels of a preliminary protocol to begin a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Minister Flanagan said: “I am encouraged by news that a ceasefire between the various parties to the conflict in Ukraine has been announced. I very much hope that this development can bring an end to the violence we have witnessed in Eastern Ukraine, which has inflicted such suffering on many thousands of ordinary civilians in recent months.

“It is incumbent on all sides in the conflict to build on the ceasefire that has been announced today to ensure that it is viable and sustainable. To that end, all sides must also work together to reach the negotiated and peaceful outcome to the crisis, based on respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, that we all wish to see.”
