Minister McEntee addresses the Annual Conference of the Association of European Mushroom Growers

Shane McEntee TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with special responsibility for Horticulture, today welcomed the members of the Association of European Mushroom Growers to Ireland, where their Conference was being held for the first time.

The mission of the Association is to represent the major producers and processors of mushrooms at EU level, to establish and implement technical specifications in relation to quality, determination of origin and the statistical monitoring of the industry.

The principal member countries are France, Spain, Italy and Belgium.

The Minister highlighted the success of the Irish mushroom industry, which he stated “had always been open to innovation and quick to adopt new technical developments”.

The Minister, referring to one of the farms the Association visited on Friday, stated it was “one the most modern mushroom production units in Europe and incorporates a number of innovative environmentally friendly and energy efficient features”.

The Minister praised the co-operation among producers which has allowed the industry to benefit from EU co-funded joint promotion campaigns in their main market areas.
