Speaking at the 47th Annual Greyhound Racing Awards in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Shane McEntee TD, acknowledged the achievements of the greyhound racing industry in 2011, noting that the awards “recognise human and canine excellence in the sport of greyhound racing, a sport in which Ireland continues to achieve great success in the international arena”.

Minister McEntee highlighted the significance of the greyhound racing industry. “The greyhound industry sustains approximately 10,300 jobs, mostly in rural areas, and contributes an estimated €500 million in economic output to local economies adjacent to greyhound tracks which have a wide geographic spread. It is a vital part of the fabric of rural society and is of enormous economic benefit to this country”.

The Minister praised the efforts of those involved in the industry and said that “in spite of the hostile economic environment, 2011 has turned out to be another successful year for the sector. The enduring strength and depth of the sport in Ireland is testament to the tireless efforts and skills of those involved in the sector through the country.” The Minister noted that Irish greyhound racing is experiencing resurgence in popularity – “overall attendances in 2011 saw an increase in numbers going through the turnstiles to reach 757,000 in 2011”.

The Minister concluded by congratulating each of the award winners on their “tremendous achievements during the 2011 season”.
