Minister of State Hayes opens the North Tipperary Agricultural Show

Tom Hayes TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine today officially opened the North Tipperary Agricultural show at Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.

Launching the show, the Minister said ‘Nenagh show is a great example of voluntary community effort in staging a wonderful event, continuing a tradition stretching back to 1875. The show boasts a huge array of the talents and skills of many people from Tipperary and surrounding counties. It is also an excellent social occasion, allowing for both urban and rural people to meet and see all that is good about the traditions and skills of farming and rural pursuits.’

Minister Hayes continued ‘The maintenance of a vibrant rural economy depends on excellence in farming and food production. This show allows for healthy competition in a range of areas, leading to an increase in the quality of output from our vital Agri-food sector. With €9 billion in exports in 2012, and a planned increase to €12 billion under the Industry led Food Harvest 2020, the Agri-food and drink sector is a vital part of the export led recovery for our country’

The Minister acknowledged the huge voluntary effort involved in staging the show, and thanked the Chairman Padraig McSweeney and Secretary Belinda Kelly in particular. He concluded by wishing all exhibitors and visitors a great day out.
