Minister Quinn announces appointment of Dr Tom Collins as Chairperson of the Governing Body of the DIT

The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D., today announced the appointment of Dr Tom Collins as Chairperson of the Governing Body of the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) with effect from 8th December 2013.

Dr Collins has vast experience in the education sector having previously served as President of the Dundalk Institute of Technology as well as interim President of NUI Maynooth and is currently serving as Chairperson of the Institute of Technology (IT) Blanchardstown.

The three institutes of technology in the Dublin region – DIT, IT Tallaght and IT Blanchardstown have signalled their intention to come together with a view to seeking designation as a Technological University and Professor Collins will play a leading role in steering this process.

Dr Collins appointment is for a five year period and the position is not remunerated.

Dr Collins succeeds Mr Sean Dorgan who has successfully served as Chairperson of the institute for the past 10 years. The Minister thanked Mr Dorgan for his contribution to the development of Dublin Institute of Technology and wished Dr Collins well in his new role.
