Minister Quinn announces appointments to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment

The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn, T.D., today announced his appointments to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).

The appointments are for a three year period to end on 31 March, 2015.

The Council is a statutory body established under the Education Act to advise the Minister on curriculum and assessment matters in early childhood, primary and post primary education.

Brigid McManus former Secretary General of the Department of Education and Skills will chair the NCCA. The role of the Chair of the NCCA is unpaid.

Minister Quinn said, “This government and I are committed to reform to ensure that our education system is capable of meeting all the challenges that our fiscal circumstances bring. The NCCA plays a key role in this by developing, planning and reviewing curriculum and assessment provision in our schools. I am delighted to be able to appoint someone of Brigid McManus’s experience to this important role.”

The Minister has also appointed Clive Byrne, Director of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals to the board, following the advertisement for expressions of interest in the position through the public appointments service.

Minister Quinn also thanked the out-going members of the NCCA board, including chair Professor Tom Collins, for their work over the past three years.

Minister Quinn will announce the full membership of the new NCCA board shortly.
