The Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, Mr. Pat Rabbitte, T.D. has welcomed the RTÉ’s success at the New York Festival Radio Awards last night. RTÉ Radio, which encompasses RTÉ Radio One, 2FM, Lyric FM, Radió na Gaeltachta and digital radio channels, was honoured with the prestigious Broadcaster of the Year Award, in addition to being named winner in another 16 categories.

This is the first time in the festival's 54-year history that an Irish station has won the Broadcaster of the Year award. The final of the competition saw 183 finalists from 26 countries take part.

Minister Rabbitte congratulated RTÉ management and staff on winning so many awards, including the prominent title of Broadcaster of the Year. He attributed the success to the overall quality of radio programming in RTÉ, and welcomed the international recognition of RTÉ’s excellence at the forefront of public broadcasting.
