Minister Rabbitte welcomes the commencement of active upstream safety regulation by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER)

The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte T.D., welcomed today’s active commencement by the CER of regulation of the upstream petroleum industry.

Minister Rabbitte said “Earlier this week I signed the Statutory Instrument which facilitates this important milestone in quality safety regulation. It formalises in Ireland a safety system compatible with best international practice, in terms of taking a safety case approach and providing increased transparency in the regulatory framework.”

Over the past two years, the CER has been establishing a new Petroleum Safety Framework as required by the Petroleum (Exploration and Extraction) Safety Act, 2010 and is now ready to accept safety case applications with respect to licensed petroleum activities.

Minister Rabbitte wished the CER well in embarking on this new regulatory regime.
