The Minister for Justice and Equality today announced the appointment by the Government of 1 Assistant Commissioner, 4 Chief Superintendents and 13 Superintendents in An Garda Síochána. The vacancy in the senior civilian post of Chief Administrative Officer is also to be filled.

Speaking after the Cabinet meeting the Minster said "I am very pleased that the Government today agreed with my request, sanctioned by my colleague the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, to make these senior Garda appointments. This development will enable the Garda Commissioner to fill key operational posts immediately, and reflects the determination of the Government, even in these difficult times, to support the Garda Síochána in the fight against crime."

The appointments were made by the Government following a competitive selection process in accordance with the statutory regulations governing promotions in the force.

The Minister added that " The agreement I have reached with my colleague, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, will in fact enable the appointment of 1 Assistant Commissioner, 7 Chief Superintendents and 18 Superintendents, as well as the filling of consequential senior vacancies arising from these appointments. I will be seeking the approval of the Government for the balance of the appointments as soon as new Garda promotion panels have been established. The agreement also means that, from now on, the strength of the senior ranks can be maintained at these new levels, so that any further vacancies within those levels will be promptly filled. This will contribute significantly towards the maintenance of the operational capacity and effectiveness of the Garda Síochána.

It is also worth recalling that these appointments follow on from the appointment in February of this year of 2 Assistant Commissioners, 8 Chief Superintendents and 23 Superintendents.

This strengthening of senior Garda management will not only enhance the Force’s operational capacity, but reinforce its managerial effectiveness at a time of continuing reform. In that context, I want to acknowledge the programme of real and substantial reform which is being delivered in the Garda Síochána under the Croke Park Agreement, such as the recent introduction of new rosters which better match the numbers on duty with policing demands. I have the every confidence in the Commissioner and the members of the Force in continuing on the programme of reform and on the delivery of a first-class policing service.”
