Minister Sherlock welcomes EPO Patent Information Conference 2011 to Ireland

The Minister for Research and Innovation Mr. Sean Sherlock T.D. announced today [Monday] that the Patents Office had been successful in its bid to bring the European Patent Office’s Patent Information Conference 2011 to Kilkenny from the 18th to 20th October 2011.

The Conference will take place in the Lyrath Estate Hotel &Convention

Centre, Kilkenny.

Making the announcement Minister Sherlock said: ‘Ireland is proud to host the European Patent Office’s Patent Information Conference 2011 as it is the leading patent information event in Europe. Kilkenny is the home of the Irish Patent Office and I know that the city will warmly welcome the approximate 400 participants who will travel from as far a field as the US and China’.

"This conference should be of great interest to Irish practitioners in the

patent information area and I would urge Irish practitioners working in the business to avail of the opportunity to network with patent professionals from across the globe to discuss issues of common interest.’

Referring to the important role of the Patents Office Minister Sherlock said: ‘A robust regime for the protection of Intellectual property rights is essential if we are to encourage and develop creativity and innovation in our economy. An environment that protects new inventions can contribute to the development of our indigenous industries and to the continued attractiveness of Ireland as a location for the investment necessary to maintain sustainable economic growth’.

The conference provides lectures and presentations on topical issues in the field of patent information. It also includes an exhibition of patent information tools and facilities and training events. This year’s event is organised in co-operation with the Irish Patents Office’.

The Key issues to be addressed at the 2011 Conference include:-

· The role of patent offices in open government

· What it takes to keep the world’s biggest patent database on track Machine-translation for patents

· The European Patents Office’s EPOQUE search engine

· Co-operative patent classification – a common classification system for Europe and the USA

· Insights from professional patent searchers on common issues of concern

Concluding Minister Sherlock said: ‘the conference will provides practitioners a unique chance to catch up on recent developments in patent information, put their own issues up for discussion or make the most of the networking opportunities.’
