Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Simon Coveney T.D. will attend a video conference of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers on Monday, 19 April.
Latest developments in Ethiopia and Ukraine will be the main subjects for discussion, and Ministers will exchange views with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba. Ministers will also discuss recent developments regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the Iran nuclear deal), the situations in Mozambique, Myanmar and Georgia, and the EU’s relationship with India. The Czech Foreign Minister will also update Ministers on the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Prague.
Commenting on the situation in Ethiopia ahead of the videoconference, Minister Coveney said:
“Ireland remains deeply concerned about the ongoing crisis in Tigray and its devastating impact on civilians. An immediate ceasefire is urgently needed, as are credible and transparent investigations into reported atrocities, including the reports of widespread sexual violence.”
The Minster commented on Ukraine:
“The build-up of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border is of grave concern and risks further destabilising a very fragile situation. Ireland is a firm supporter of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We call for swift action to be taken to de-escalate tensions and a renewed focus on implementation of the Minsk Agreements.”
Commenting on the JCPOA (the Iran nuclear deal), the Minister said:
“Both Ireland and the European Union remain committed to the success of the JCPOA. We welcome the recent talks in Vienna as a positive step towards its restoration.’
On the deteriorating situation in Myanmar, the Minister said:
“We are open to considering all measures to restore the democratic path in Myanmar, including further sanctions and efforts aimed at promoting a political solution to the crisis.”
Ministers will receive an update on the situation in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, where an insurgency continues to gain traction.
“Ireland is concerned by the situation which is unfolding in Mozambique. Work is being taken forward on options for increased EU development, humanitarian and security assistance, and Ireland strongly supports this integrated approach to the conflict.”
