Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Andrew Doyle T.D, today launched the Farm Hazardous Waste Collection scheme at Carnew Livestock Mart in Co. Wicklow.
Minister Doyle stated “this scheme is a wonderful example of inter-agency cooperation, but more importantly it is an indicator of how anxious farmers are to dispose of hazardous waste in a fully traceable and environmentally sensitive manner.”
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has teamed up with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Teagasc, and local authorities, WEEE Ireland, European Recycling Platform (ERP) and Enva to operate ten bring centres for the collection of farm hazardous wastes across the country in October and November 2016.
Minister Doyle went on to acknowledge the farmers who had supported and used the scheme in previous years (2013-2015) and said that early indications from the farming community are that 2016 will be as busy as previous years. He urged all farmers to avail of this opportunity to rid their farms of any such hazardous waste and that by doing so they will play their part in helping to prevent any hazardous waste incidents in the future.
Minister Doyle also commended the multi-agency and inter-departmental approach in organizing and funding the initiative, and applauded the EPA for their commitment to removal of hazardous waste from farms.
The opening collection today in Carnew, Co Wicklow marks the start of the 2016 campaign, where some 2,000 farmers are expected to participate by clearing sheds of out-of-date chemicals and other hard-to-manage wastes.
Minister Doyle concluded by stating that “safe disposal of these wastes is important for every farmer in keeping the farmyard safe for themselves and their family; in producing quality-assured products; and in maintaining Ireland’s green and sustainable image.”

Waste types accepted Costs
Out of date pesticides and biocides; veterinary medicines and animal health-care wastes; needles and syringes; waste paints; aerosols; corrosives (acids;, detergents); oil and air filters; oily wastes; brake fluids; brake pads; antifreeze; adhesives; coolants All charged at €2/kg (excl. VAT @ 13.5%)
Waste packaging e.g., plastic and/or metal containers whether contaminated with hazardous materials or not. All charged at €4/kg (excl. VAT @ 13.5%)
Waste engine oil and waste hydraulic oil (do not mix with vegetable oil) Free of charge
Waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) (e.g., TVs, computers, fridges, freezers, power tools, kettles); all batteries and light bulbs Free of charge
The following wastes will not be accepted:
1. Clean triple rinsed empty pesticide and dairy hygiene containers.
2. Silage wrap
3. Fertiliser and Feed bags
4. Bale netting and twine
Important Information
Each waste type must be clearly identifiable, segregated and packaged to avoid leaks.
MIXED wastes will NOT be accepted.
All needles and syringes to be delivered to the centres in separate sealed containers.
Payment by cash, cheque or card.
Farmers will be issued with a receipt of payment and a certificate of transfer of control of waste.
Wastes can NOT be dropped BEFORE or AFTER the designated collection date.
