The Minister of State with responsibility for Disabilities, Finian McGrath TD, has today welcomed the launch of the National Safeguarding Committee’s Strategic Plan 2017-2021, to guide its work to safeguard vulnerable adults over the next five years. The National Safeguarding Committee includes representatives from a range of agencies and is independently chaired by Patricia Rickard-Clarke, former Commissioner of the Law Reform Commission.
Minister McGrath said, “I very much welcome the launch of the National Safeguarding Committee’s Strategic Plan 2017-2021, which I'm confident will help deliver tangible results. This is an important and focused plan, which will guide this nation’s work in safeguarding vulnerable persons at risk of abuse. We need to promote social change around the rights and protections of adults who may be vulnerable to abuse. I know that the National Safeguarding Committee are working very hard in this area and I want to take this opportunity to thank them for the delivery of this plan.'
The Minister went on to say: “There is often discussion of historical and past abuse but the fact is that any vulnerable adult today can be subject to abuse. We must always act when we are faced with safeguarding issues and not be complacent. I commend the work of Patricia Rickard-Clarke and the Committee and offer my support to this vital ongoing work.”
