The Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald TD, has today welcomed the conclusion and signing of the contracts for a Courts Bundle Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Project which will see the construction or redevelopment of seven regional Courthouses. Total project costs will be around € 135 million and it is anticipated that around 700 new jobs are to be created during the period of construction.
The National Development Finance Agency will today sign the contract with BAM, the selected main contractor for Courts Bundle PPP Project.
Four new courthouses are to be built in Drogheda, Letterkenny, Limerick and Wexford. Substantial refurbishment and extension works are planned for existing courthouses in Cork, Mullingar and Waterford.
The intention is that construction will start early in New Year with a view to completing the new and refurbished buildings within the next 24 months (December 2017). Under the PPP model, the courthouses will be designed, built, financed and maintained for twenty five years by BAM PPP PGGM.
Minister Fitzgerald stated: “This Government has proved itself to be one of the most reforming in the history of the State when it comes to the Courts and the legal system. It is only right that as we update our laws and legal systems that we also update our Courts infrastructure.
“This PPP project for the construction and redevelopment of regional courthouses represents a substantial investment in the modernisation of our Court facilities with project costs estimated to be €135 million which will provide an important boost to the local economies of seven regional cities and towns and it is expected that up to 700 new jobs are to be created during the period of construction.”
“This investment is only possible thanks to the economic recovery being overseen by this Government and these seven major building projects are further example of how the fruits of the economic recovery are being spread throughout the regions.”
Minister Fitzgerald added that this PPP project will be followed shortly by a further PPP project for the development of a new state-of-the-art Family & Children’s Court complex at Hammond Lane in Dublin.
The Minister expressed her appreciation for the cooperation of all those involved in the project, in particular, the Chief Justice and the Courts Service, the Office of the Public Works as well as the staff of National Development Finance Agency who are responsible for the procurement and delivery of the Courts Bundle PPP Project and stated “My best wishes for continued success in delivering modern and comfortable court facilities for all users of the Courts.”
