Following the most recent bombing in Turkey at the weekend, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan TD, issued the following statement:

The Minister said:

"I condemn the bombing in the Hakkari province of Turkey yesterday and extend my condolences to the Government and people of Turkey, and to the families of those killed in this attack as they deal with the loss of their loved ones. Our thoughts are also with those injured in this attack and with their families.

"I condemn terrorism in all its forms, and reiterate that we must all stand together against terrorism in order to protect democracy and maintain peace and security and the safety of our citizens."

A car bomb killed at least ten soldiers and eight civilians on Sunday, 9 October in Hakkari province in the southeast of Turkey. The bomb exploded outside a gendarmerie checkpoint on the Semdinli-Yuksekova highway on Sunday morning. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but it is believed that the PKK were responsible. This bomb is the latest in a series of terrorist attacks in Turkey: on 6 October an attack on a police station in Istanbul injured at least 10 people; on 8 October, two men who apparently were preparing for a suicide bomb attack blew themselves up when confronted by police a short distance outside Ankara.
