Minister Flanagan offers his condolences on the death of former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Lord Patrick Mayhew

“I learned with sadness of the death over the weekend of former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Lord Patrick Mayhew.

Lord Mayhew served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1992-97 during a very critical phase of the Peace Process. As the longest serving Minister in this post, he will be remembered for his role in the seminal Downing Street Declaration, as well as the crucial negotiations that led to the convening of the multi-party talks that resulted in the historic Good Friday Agreement.

He is one of many people who contributed to peace and reconciliation on our island and I offer my thoughts and condolences, on behalf of the Government, to Lord Mayhew’s wife and children at this sad time.”
