Minister for Health welcomes appointment of Dr Peter Boylan to assist with preparations for the implementation of arrangements for termination of pregnancy and related services

Minister for Health Simon Harris has welcomed the appointment by the Health Service Executive of Dr Peter Boylan to assist with their preparations for the implementation of arrangements for termination of pregnancy and related services.

Dr Boylan's role will include consultation with key stakeholders and communications relevant to the services on behalf of the HSE.

In particular, Dr Boylan will play a key role in liaison with the medical colleges to ensure robust clinical guidelines are developed to support the delivery of the service. He will continue to play a leadership role in this regard with the relevant medical colleges. Dr Boylan is a leading figure in obstetrics and gynaecology. He has just completed a two year term as Chair of the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and was previously the Master of the National Maternity Hospital. Welcoming the appointment, Minister Harris said:

Peter Boylan has a wealth of experience in caring for women. Over the course of his work, he has proven himself to be a strong patient advocate and a compassionate campaigner for women's rights. "I am grateful to him for taking on this position and I look forward to him working with the HSE to ensure safe, woman-centred services are operational in January.
