“Today I would ask everyone to pause for a moment and remember Dara Fitzpatrick, Mark Duffy, Ciaran Smith and Paul Ormsby.
Let’s stop and think about the fact that they gave their lives in their service to each and every one of us. A debt that we can never repay.
On this day, one year after the tragedy in Blacksod that ended their young lives, we recall their bravery, commitment and service to their country and we send our thanks and sympathies to those they leave behind, their families, colleagues and friends.
While nothing can take away from the grief and pain felt by all those who knew and loved Dara, Mark, Ciaran and Paul, perhaps they can take some small consolation in the fact that their country is with them today – sharing their loss, sending them support in their sadness.
Today, I would also suggest that we pause and think of all those who work in our emergency services, often at great risk to themselves. These are the extraordinary people who put their lives on the line every day so that we may be safe in the water, on the roads and in the air.
Let March 14th be the byword for heroes, when we join together and salute those who sacrifice all for the greater good.”
