Minister Humphreys announces appointments to the Irish Manuscripts Commission

The Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Ms Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Tuesday) announced the following recent appointments to the Irish Manuscripts Commission.

All appointees were assessed by the Public Appointments Service.

Prof John McCafferty was appointed to be a member and the Chairman Designate of the Commission for a term of five years.

The following previous members of the Commission were re-appointed for a term of three years:

· Prof Jane Ohlmeyer
· Prof Mary O'Dowd
· Prof Daíbhí Ó Cróinín
· Prof James Kelly
· Dr Thomas O’Connor
· Ms Máire Mac Conghail

The following were newly appointed as members of the Commission for a term of five years:

· Dr Hiram Morgan
· Dr Ciara Breathnach
· Dr Liam Chambers
· Ms Kate Manning
· Dr David Hayton
· Dr Patrick Geoghegan
· Prof Marian Lyons
· Prof Alvin Jackson
· Dr Elva Johnston
· Ms Nicola Morris

The Irish Manuscripts Commission also includes three ex-officio members; the Directors of the National Archives of Ireland, the National Library of Ireland, and the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland.

The Irish Manuscripts Commission was founded by warrant on 10 October, 1928. The Commission was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee with no share capital on 24 January, 2006.

The mission of the Commission is
· To publish to the highest scholarly standard, editions, calendars and lists of primary materials,
· To promote public awareness of primary source materials and their importance for the history, heritage and culture of Ireland,
· To advise the Minister on policy towards preserving and making accessible documentary sources of Ireland's past,
· To bring these sources to the widest possible readership, nationally and internationally, through the Commission's publication programme, and its commitment to online access in general and to the Commission's out-of-print publications in particular.
