The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Monday) commended the Irish Golden Globe nominees; Ruth Negga, Colin Farrell, Caitriona Balfe and the film Sing Street.

Speaking today Minister Humphreys said:
“This year’s Golden Globe nominations list includes a strong Irish presence, which underlines the fact that 2016 has been a very good year for the Irish film industry. It is fantastic to see Irish talent like Colin Farrell, Ruth Negga and Caitriona Balfe up for major awards.

“I visited the set of Sing Street during filming, and it was immediately clear that it was brimming with young Irish talent. The film went on to secure a strong box office, and it will be further boosted by this Golden Globe nomination.

“Sing Street and The Lobster both received funding from the Irish Film Board. The awards season which is now upon us, is a very important time for the Irish film sector to open up new opportunities. This strong showing in the Golden Globe nominations will help Irish filmmakers to open doors and broker deals for future projects.

“Last week, the Government launched Creative Ireland, an ambitious new arts and cultural initiative for the next five years. One of its key pillars focuses on making Ireland a global hub for excellence in media production. In 2017, we will be developing a roadmap for growing the Irish film industry further in the years ahead.”
