Minister of State Josepha Madigan TD has today begun her new role at the Department of Education with responsibility for Special Education and Inclusion.

The Minister is today receiving detailed briefings from Department officials on the range of issues for which she has responsibility, including the provisions being put in place in school and home-based provision this summer to support students with complex needs.

Minister Madigan said:

I am honoured to have this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students and families all across Ireland, through this new and critically important role as the first Minister of State with responsibility for Special Education and Inclusion.  

We all want to see an education system in which every child can flourish. Every child has unique needs and gifts, and I will strive to support our schools in their work to ensure that schools and education settings are welcoming and inclusive places, where each child has the opportunities and support that they need to progress, learn and develop to their full potential.

I want particularly to listen to the voices of children themselves, and hear of their experiences and ideas, as well of course as their parents, and the highly committed and skilled teachers and members of the school community that support them. 

 The Government has highlighted the importance of equality and inclusion in the organisation of Departments and roles, and I intend to be a strong advocate for those with special educational needs.

 I look forward to meeting with stakeholders across the sector to discuss the key issues and challenges that face our children with special educational needs and their families in ensuring that they have inclusive and rewarding educational experiences.
