Mr Eoghan Murphy, T.D., Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government has today announced details of approvals under the new phase of the Fire Services Appliance Capital Programme 2018-2020.
Outlining the details, the Minister said “I am happy to announce a further investment of approximately €9.2 million under this fire appliance procurement programme.” The programme will see the construction and delivery of 23 new standard Class B appliances to 20 local fire authorities between 2018 and 2020 with an expected contribution of €400,000 per unit from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government. This follows on from the initial Joint Procurement Programme which saw 16 fire authorities purchase 20 new fire appliances at a cost of approximately €8 million. It is anticipated that the last of these vehicles will be completed and delivered by the end of this year.

Minister Murphy said “This further investment announced today, underlines and highlights the Government’s continuing commitment to the fire service and those who work in it protecting people, communities, property and local infrastructure from fire and other emergency situations”. The Minister went on to say “I am acutely aware of the vital role played by fire services here in Ireland and in other jurisdictions, and of the challenges and issues that exist in this area. The Grenfell Tower tragedy in London that happened on the day of my appointment is a case in point”. Following on from this tragedy the Minister has established a Fire Safety Task Force which he has tasked with considering life safety issues in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire, the appraisal of and reporting on existing arrangements and systems for fire safety, and the provision of a report on initial steps by the end of September, 2017 and a further report in 2018.
