Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien has urged people to adhere to the Met Éireann weather warnings which will come into effect today.

A status red wind warning has now issued for Cork and will take effect from 9pm tonight until midnight. A status orange wind warning has been issued for Munster, Galway and Mayo and will take effect from 9pm tonight until 6am tomorrow. A status yellow wind warning remains in place for the rest of the country from 9pm tonight until the end of tomorrow.

Minister O’Brien said those on holidays in unfamiliar locations should pay particular attention to the local weather forecast. He has asked those in camping sites along the coast to take extra precautions and move to secure ground. 

“Many people are away on holidays in coastal counties at this time. They might not be familiar with the area and need to stay back from the coast so that they can remain safe,” he said.

Minister O’Brien and his officials have also been in contact with local authorities to ensure that every support is made available to our rough sleepers and those experiencing homelessness during this current weather alert. Minister O’Brien added “I have advised local authorities that all supports and resources are available to them to ensure the safety of our rough sleepers and those using emergency accommodation. Local authorities have been instructed to ensure that shelter and accommodation is available to all who require it for the duration of this alert. Additional outreach teams are working hard to bring as many rough sleepers indoors, as quickly as possible. I would urge any member of the public to report to their local authority any rough sleeper they may encounter so that we can take care of these vulnerable individuals.”

“We are asking all road users to be aware of the hazardous traveling conditions. It is also critical that people take advice in respect of fallen or damaged electricity wires, never ever touch or approach fallen wires, stay clear and contact the ESB on 1850 372999.

“Finally, we are asking people not to engage in risky behaviour that puts the lives of our emergency service personnel in danger. Now is not the time to participate in water sports or activities. Please be mindful of the warnings and stay safe,” he concluded.
