Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development, Joe McHugh TD holds discussions in Dublin with the Hungarian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Dr László Szabó

• Talks focus on bilateral political and economic relations, Irish and Hungarian diaspora policy, and the Future of the EU

The Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development, Joe McHugh TD held talks in Dublin this evening, Tuesday 22 November, with the Hungarian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Dr László Szabó.

The talks focused on bilateral relations, Irish and Hungarian diaspora policy, as well as the future of the European Union in the context of the British vote to leave.

Following the talks, Minister McHugh said:

“Ireland and Hungary enjoy very good bilateral relations as EU partners and Minister Szabó’s visit was a great opportunity to build on these ties.
We also explored ways in which we could further cooperate with Hungary building on previous exchanges of best practice in diaspora engagement.

He continued:

“Naturally, given the UK decision to leave the EU, there was also some discussion of preparation for the negotiations phase. I took the opportunity to highlight Ireland’s key priorities – namely, our economy, Northern Ireland and the Common Travel Area. I also emphasised that Ireland is a fully committed EU member state and partner, unwavering in our commitment to the future of the EU.”
