Minister Catherine Martin and Minister of State Dara Calleary expressed their disappointment today following the announcement that the Ryder Cup 2020, which was scheduled for September in Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, is to be postponed until 2021. However, they understand the reasons for the US PGA taking this decision, in light of the ongoing pandemic and the absolute need to protect public safety.

This decision will result in the Ryder Cup, which was due to take place in Adare in 2026, also being rescheduled. A similar situation arose when Ireland last hosted this major event. Following the events of September 11, 2001, the Ryder Cup was also postponed, resulting in the event, which was due to take place in Straffan, County Kildare, in 2005, eventually taking place in 2006.  

The Department will continue to work with the European Tour on their schedule and will build on our plans to host the best Ryder Cup yet when the event returns to Ireland. A Ryder Cup held in Ireland in 2027 would bring the added dimension of marking the centenary of this special event which was first held in 1927.
