The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD, and the Minister with responsibility for Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, today congratulated Team Ireland on their performances at the European Championships in Berlin and Glasgow.

Minister Ross said:

I would like to congratulate the Irish team on a fantastic performance at the European Championships in Berlin and Glasgow. Following on from our Women’s Hockey team’s success at the Hockey World Cup in London it has been an absolutely brilliant week for Irish sport. Special praise has to go to Paul and Gary O'Donovan who claimed a silver medal in the Lightweight Double Sculls, Shane Ryan who won a bronze in the 50m backstroke, Thomas Barr who won a historic bronze medal in the 400m hurdles in Berlin and of course young Rhys McClenaghan who won a historic gold on the pommel horse in the Men’s Apparatus Final in Glasgow. Hats off to you all.

Minister Griffin added:

These have been magnificent Championships for Team Ireland with many excellent results and lots of encouraging performances which all bodes well for the future. It is great to see so many athletes who are based at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus in Abbotstown performing so well during the Championships and reaping the benefits of the world-class facilities and supports available to them in their preparations for these Championships. I look forward to many more athletes benefiting from the magnificent facilities and supports at the Campus in the future.
