Ministers Ross and Griffin congratulate team Ireland on their success at the European Games in Minsk

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr. Shane Ross TD, and the Minister with responsibility for Sport, Mr. Brendan Griffin TD, today welcomed home Team Ireland and congratulated them on their performances at the European Games in Minsk.

Minister Ross said:

I would like to congratulate Team Ireland on a fantastic performance at the European Games in Minsk. It has been a great week for Irish sport, with the team achieving 7 medals in all.  The success of our boxers who claimed a total of 6 medals, and Chloe and Sam Magee who won bronze in the Badminton Mixed Doubles is an amazing achievement. I want to say a particular well done to Kellie Harrington, despite an unfortunate set back she has still claimed a fantastic silver victory for Ireland. Their performances and the excellent performances of all of the athletes who represented Ireland at the European Games will encourage and inspire every young person throughout the country who dreams of representing Ireland in sport.

Minister Griffin said:

These European Games gave us a fantastic display of the skill and commitment of all of the athletes who were part of Team Ireland. Each of them has represented Ireland with pride over the past week and they are fully deserving of their success. It is wonderful to see our athletes performing so well during these Games and reaping the rewards for all of their hard work in preparing for Minsk. I am delighted to congratulate Chloe and Sam Magee and each of the boxers on their medal wins.
