The Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald T.D., has extended her congratulations to twenty-six year old Olympic hopeful Katie Taylor.

The Irish boxer yesterday (Wednesday) qualified to represent Ireland in the London 2012 Olympics and is currently competing in the World AIBA World Women’s Championship in Quinhunangdao, China.

Speaking this morning, Minister Fitzgerald said: “I am delighted that Katie Taylor has qualified to represent Ireland in the Olympics and would like to extend my congratulations to her on her enormous achievements so far and wish her, and all the other Irish athletes competing in the 2012 Olympics, the very best of luck.

“As a young competitive female athlete Katie has been an inspiration to her generation. She has encouraged female participation in boxing and inspired both boys and girls into the world of sports. She has broken glass ceilings throughout her career to date and is one of Ireland’s best loved sports people. She has a tremendous support base in Ireland, all of whom I’m sure will be eagerly watching her progress at the Olympics.”
