Press Statement from Minister McEntee regarding St Vincent's Care Centre, Athlone

Ms Helen McEntee T.D., Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, today (6th July 2016) confirmed that, that for health and safety reasons it has become necessary to transfer residents at St Vincent’s Care Centre in Athlone to alternative accommodation on a phased basis over the next couple of days.

The HSE has taken this decision on foot of an electrical report which highlighted a number of risks at the centre. The Minister has been reassured by the HSE that this is a temporary measure and that the necessary mitigating actions are being taken including the deployment of extra staff for the duration of the transfer. Communication with residents and staff began yesterday evening and will continue through the process. The Minister has asked officials from her Department to maintain close contact with the HSE during this period.

St Vincent’s Care Centre will re-open as soon as possible once the necessary refurbishment works are completed.
The Capital Programme for Older Persons Residential Services announced earlier this year includes a 50 bedded unit as a replacement for St Vincent’s by 2021.
