Project Team appointed by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to run the Aran LIFE+ project

Monday, 13th January 2014—Following a publicly advertised recruitment competition held before Christmas, the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has announced that a team of three has been appointed to start work immediately on the implementation of the Aran LIFE+ project.

The team will be responsible for implementing the project which is aimed at developing and demonstrating conservation management practices of local farmers on the designated Natura 2000 sites of the three Aran islands. The project which is primarily funded under the EU’s LIFE+ programme is worth around €2.6m and will run for 4 years. The project will harness local farming knowledge and experience with the scientific expertise of other project partners to overcome some of the challenges of island farming and to improve the conservation status of the designated sites.

Welcoming the appointments, the Minister for State in the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Dinny McGinley said that he was delighted to see the project begin and that it would be of significant benefit to the islands’ community.
