Statement by Tánaiste on Beirut Bombing

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore T.D. made the following statement in relation to the bombing in Beirut this morning:

"I unreservedly condemn the terrorist attack which took place in Beirut this morning. The loss of life suffered in this appalling act is unacceptable.

I extend my sympathies to the families of those killed and wounded and to the Lebanese and Iranian Governments on this attack directed against them and the people of Lebanon. I hope that those responsible for this atrocity are quickly apprehended and brought to justice.

Ireland is strongly committed to safeguarding Lebanon’s stability and security and will maintain this commitment through our active and long-standing contribution to the UNIFIL peace-keeping mission.

There are thankfully no reports of any Irish among the victims of this morning’s bombing. Concerned citizens should make contact with the Consular Section of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade at 01-4082000."
