Statement by Minister Flanagan following sentencing of Nadiya Savchenko

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, has responded to the sentencing by a Russian Court of Ukrainian citizen, Nadiya Savchenko today (Tuesday). He stated:

“Ireland has strongly supported the calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Nadiya Savchenko, as has the European Union and its Member States. I discussed her case with my Ukrainian counterpart, Minister Klimkin, during my visit to Ukraine last year and EU Foreign Ministers addressed the matter at our most recent Foreign Affairs Council meeting last week in Brussels.

“I am therefore extremely disappointed at the fact that a Russian Court has found Nadiya guilty of complicity in murder. The exceedingly harsh sentence of 22 years in prison adds to the injustice in this case. I call again for the early release of Ms. Savchenko.”
