Statement by Minister Flanagan following the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2321 (2016) on the DPRK
I welcome the unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2321 (2016), which was co-sponsored by Ireland and 49 other Member States, including all 28 EU Member States.
The Resolution expands the sanctions regime against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea following its fifth nuclear test conducted on 9 September. The new measures target its ability to finance its illegal nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, or any other activities related to WMD development. As with previous sanctions, the measures imposed are not intended to have adverse humanitarian consequences for the civilian population of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
I once again urge the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to comply fully with international obligations, to cease all nuclear testing and re-engage with the Six Party Talks on the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, immediately and without preconditions.
