Statement by Minister Flanagan on the passing of Professor Ronan Fanning

I have learned with sadness of the passing of Professor Ronan Fanning, an admired and respected historian. Professor Fanning made an enormous contribution to Documents on Irish Foreign Policy during his nineteen year involvement with the series. His dedication enabled the series to attain a pre-eminent scholarly reputation both in Ireland, internationally and among the global community of foreign policy publishing projects. Ronan will be greatly missed by his many friends and colleagues. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family.

On a personal note, I first met Ronan as a student in UCD. I greatly admired his intellect and engaging manner. His extensive catalogue of books helped open up important historical events and personalities to a wide audience in Ireland and internationally. He was an important public intellectual and will be greatly missed.
