Statement by the Minister for Justice and Equality on the death of Seamus Mallon (RIP)

I was greatly saddened to hear of the death of Seamus Mallon.  As a politician, I admired Seamus for many years and I was privileged to know him. He was a pivotal figure in Northern Ireland who resolutely pursued peace and justice for all communities.  A man of great integrity and courage, he never yielded in his opposition to the terrible violence perpetrated during the troubles even when this stance led to threats against his own life.  Seamus Mallon was one of the central figures in the peace process, both as an architect of the Good Friday Agreement and as Deputy First Minister; he was steadfast in achieving a better and peaceful future for all people in Northern Ireland.

I wish to offer my sincere condolences to his family at this sad time.
