Statement from Minister Flanagan on Ibrahim Halawa

"The Irish Government’s strategy in the case of Ibrahim Halawa is focused on two key objectives: first, to see this citizen freed by the Egyptian authorities so that he can return to his family and his studies in Ireland as soon as possible; second, to provide every possible consular support for his welfare while he remains in detention.

"As would be the case for any Irish citizen imprisoned abroad, any suggestion of ill-treatment in this case would be treated with the utmost seriousness by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and would be raised urgently with the Egyptian authorities.

"Ibrahim has been visited on over 50 occasions by Embassy officials and this very high level of consular visitation is an important practical tool in monitoring our citizen’s welfare and ensuring that the Embassy in Cairo is well placed to raise any concerns arising directly with the prison authorities.

"These visits also allow regular contact with the prison authorities who are aware of the Irish Government’s strong and sustained interest in the welfare of this citizen. I can confirm that the Egyptian Government is fully aware of the priority the Irish Government attaches to the welfare and interests of this citizen.

"The most recent visit to Ibrahim was undertaken by the Ambassador, Damien Cole, earlier this week (on Sunday last, 29 May). The Embassy will also attend the next trial hearing which is scheduled for the 29 June."
