Statement from Minister of State, Malcolm Noonan TD – Traveller Pride Week 2020

In line with the commitment in the Programme for Government I wish to see a full complement of heritage personnel across all of our local authorities.

In the context of Heritage Ireland 2030 it is important that we embrace the cultural diversity and heritage of our entire community, I am considering, among other things, a dedicated heritage liaison officer. This would involve the Heritage Council appointing someone with a dedicated function to deliver a policy and programme on inclusive heritage with a focus particularly  on the Traveller community.

The appointment of a dedicated Inclusive Heritage Liaison Officer would over time become an important asset in highlighting a wider appreciation of Traveller and other minority cultures in Ireland and foster integration and understanding within the wider community. Traveller culture and heritage in particular is rich in music, language, the oral tradition and in craft, as evidenced through the celebration of Traveller Pride this week.
